Bicentenary celebration in the province of Nigeria




Bicentenary - Initiatives

The Grand Finale of the Bicentenary Celebration of the Province of Nigeria came to climax on Saturday 3rd June, 2017 at the Marist Brothers Sports Complex, Uturu Abia State, Nigeria.

The celebration started with the Provincial and Council constituting an eleven member Bicentenary Planning/Preparatory Committee. The Committee included Marist Brothers, Lay Marists, Marist Old Boys and Girls.

Among the initiatives carried out by the Committee were: media chats and publicity using radio, television, newspapers, social media, and parish announcements. Notable dignitaries were invited on the grand finale. State governors, federal ministers, commissioners, local government chairmen, Marist old boys and girls, Lay Marists, parents, friends, relatives, students and the general public.

Other initiatives were prayers on Bicentenary, seminars and workshops in different zones in the Province. There were also football competitions among the Marist Schools in Nigeria. At the end of the football competition, Marist Comprehensive College, Ezzagu Ebonyi State, emerged champions of the male and female football. Trophies were presented to the school on the grand finale.

Other events on the Bicentenary Grand Finale Day were; Holy Mass presided by the Catholic Bishop of Okigwe Diocese, lectures by the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Professor Joseph Ahaneku and Professor Afam Icha-Itumah, Dean Faculty of Education, Federal University Udufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State.

There was also lunch of a Bicentenary Video Documentary Production on the Mission of the Marist Brothers in Nigeria. Visit to the graveside of our departed Brothers and prayers said. There was also tour of the Marist works at Uturu by the dignitaries.

The Bicentenary Tree was planted. This Bicentenary tree planting was one of the high point of the celebration. Also, a novelty football match between the Marist Brothers and Old Boys of all the Marist Schools was played. At the end, the old boys defeated the Brothers in penalty. There were traditional dances from Marist students, songs, eating and drinking. The Bicentenary Celebration was one of the greatest Marist celebration ever held in the Province of Nigeria, according to feedback from the Brothers, Lay Marists, parents, students and the general public.
