Bicentenary Marist Brothers Australia

Bicentenary - Initiatives

2 January 2017 is the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Institute by St Marcellin. This significant milestone will be celebrated across the Marist world.

In Australia, a series of events are planned so that we, who hold the Marist charism close to us, can celebrate the achievements of the last 200 years and look hopefully to the continued contribution of the Charism to young people and the Church.

MARIST THEME FOR 2017 | AWAKEN! Marists 200>

The 2017 Australian Marist theme will be AWAKEN! Marists 200>. This will help provide a special focus for the Bicentenary year and will unify liturgical, spiritual and formation experiences.

JOURNEY | of the Bicentenary Paintings

To mark the Bicentenary, the Province has commissioned renowned Australian artist Michael Galovic to create four pieces of art commemorating respectively Montagne, Fourvière, Lavalla and the May Miracle.

These Paintings will travel across the country and spend some time in each Association Region. Schools, ministries, communities and Association groups are invited to create a gathering, prayer or celebration around the images when they are in their area. A booklet to accompany the arts works will be prepared by the MLF Team

VIDEO | on St Marcellin and the Marists

A 10-minute video on St Marcellin and the Marists is being created for use by schools and groups. It will be launched for 6 June.

CELEBRATIONS | Schools and Colleges

Schools and Colleges will organise their own ways of celebrating the Bicentenary. For most this will be coordinated with one of the major liturgical celebrations, most often Champagnat Day, but in some schools on their own major day of festivity.

MAY TO JUNE | Marian Lecture Series

The Marist Association is to sponsor an annual Marian Lecture Series. It will be offered for the first time in 2017. The inaugural presenter will be Dom Mark Patrick Hederman, the Abbott Emeritus of Glenstall Abbey, Ireland. The dates of these metropolitan and regional lectures will be advertised.

2017 | Photographic Record

A photographic record of Brothers’ communities and Residences will be made early in 2017 as a snapshot in time.
