Marist spirituality course with Br. Teófilo Minga

03/06/2008: Colombia

Recently we made a study of the book Water from the Rock, guided by Brother Teófilo. In doing so we were quite touched; we felt that were beginning to see how demanding this book may be for the entire Marist world. As a matter of fact, Water from the Rock is a solid source of spirituality, a source that continually invites us to drink of its waters as we make our way on the Marist pilgrimage.

We were happy to see Brother Teófilo’s great enthusiasm, his manner of reflecting the Marist way of life through his work. We value what he is doing to spread and share the essence of Marist spirituality with those who have chosen religious life, living out their lives in self-giving to others, having fallen in love with Jesus Christ whose Gospel they desire to know and put into practice.

We felt ourselves called to grow as people and especially as Marist Brothers, accepting wholeheartedly the challenges we face because of our desire to follow Jesus: a point developed in the document at nº 149. This section speaks about going to those places where others do not want to go, having the courage to move to marginal spaces and to offer our presence and our persevering service to the outcasts and abandoned of our society. We sense here our spirituality’s missionary dimension that is now being clearly revived through the Ad Gentes project (n° 150). Of this topic, Brother Teófilo spoke with great enthusiasm. He informed us too, although very briefly, about the Hermitage Project” seeing it as a fundamental element for the future development of our spirituality.

We felt ourselves challenged too by nº 42 that invites us to be capable of giving witness in the world. As a consequence we are called to leave aside mundane values and to move forward with determination according to the project which Jesus Christ has for us. Very often such a project demands that we live in a manner contrary to the ways of the world. This is the manner in which we live our spirituality. This is the road to be followed by all those who feel attracted and called by this spirituality. This is the way that shows us how to be “living water, and how to allow others, in their turn, to become living water for all those who are thirsty for spirituality, in particular for Marist spirituality.

Finally, Mary, our Good Mother, teaches us how to be models of listening, how to experience love of the poor and to be open to God’s message. Her way of living and her manner of putting the word of God into practice challenges us when we feel inclined to remain merely at the level of speaking and thinking. Mary invites us rather to live in an attitude of constant “visitation”. This idea is brought out very clearly in sections such as 75, 131, 134 and 151, among so many other places where reference is made to Mary.
