Province Retreat Madagascar

30/04/2009: Madagascar

From April 6 to 11, 2009, the first of the Province’s annual retreats took place at the Centre d’Accueil located in the city of Antsirabe. About twenty Brothers responded to the Provincial’s invitation to make the retreat, very significant as such spiritual exercises are. The retreat unfolded in a way meant to address all the requirements of such experiences: conferences, times of silence, intense prayer, interviews with the Provincial, etc. In addition, the retreat provided the welcome opportunity to deal with the theme of “community leadership.”

A new feature marked the occasion: two exceptional retreat directors coming to us from Rome: Brother Kalisa, and Brother Teofilo. Their presence was really a grace that enriched the Malgache Province. What is more, the days of the retreat were those of Holy Week itself, providing a truly sacred environment for the retreat.

The topic of Community Leadership was introduced and developed by Brother Kalisa, who handled the subject with clarity and in depth. His message was readily received because he showed himself conscious of the concrete realities of community life in the Province. Brother Teofilo, for his part, guided us along, day by day, through the liturgies from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday, the high point of the Easter Triduum.

Now more than ever before, we have certainly become aware that the General Admini-stration has a major concern: to help the Malgache communities grow in their understanding and practice of Marist spirituality. We recall, for example, that the Superior General, Brother Sean himself, led our first annual retreat in 2008. Then, in September 2008, Brother Teofilo led the second Province retreat, during which we had the chance to deepen the message that had been brought to us by the document, “Water from the Rock.”

From what has been said to us by all of the retreat leaders, the message that has come across as most important has been «authority at the service of brotherhood.» The various dimensions of the Superior’s service might be summed up and retained in two phrases: “to become bread; to be Eucharist.”

We express our gratitude for the dedication and generosity of the two Brothers from the Generalate who joined us to lead the retreat-session. The content of the retreat will re-main for us a spiritual treasure helping us in the renewal of our Malgache communities.
