First Forum on the joint formation of Brothers and Laity

27/08/2009: Brazil

On 3 August 2009, the Forum on the joint formation of brothers and lay people of the Marist Province of « Brasil Centro-Norte » was held at the Provincial House. It had as objectives: to share experiences of joint formation at the level of the Marist Institute; to become informed about the projects realized, and in the course of realization, by the Central Bureau of Juridical Associations UNEE – UNBEC; to provide a programme for a brief collective analysis of joint formation in the draft of the Provincial Plan for the joint formation of brothers and laity.

It was a very rich time, inspired by the document « Around the same table ». We formed a large circle of exchange and communion, in which the leaders and representatives of the different departments of our Province took part, including the Brother Provincial, Claudino Falchetto, and others who helped us in the reflection.

Starting with the experiences of joint formation in the Institute, we were able to hear about and share what people had experienced at the International Marist Mission Assembly at Mendès, at the International Meeting on Joint Formation at Quito, and at the « Mission and Governance » Meeting in Guatemala. We were also brought up to date about the project of joint formation which the Marist Union of Brasil is preparing.

These times of sharing indicated new horizons, raised possibilities of moving forward and helped rediscover the elements which should be guaranteed in the joint formation of brothers and laity of the Province. It became evident, too, of the great importance of deepening the discussion on formation, in assuring the balance between knowledge and practice, and acting so that the projects are interconnected at the local, regional and provincial levels.

We move ahead, in search of a new heart for a new world, and we ask ourselves: « Has the time now come to take stock, to discern what is of the Spirit and what is not, and to make those bold moves necessary to keep Marist life and mission vital well into this century? » (Br.Seán Sammon, New Hearts for a New World, pp. 32-3).
