Every year, on the occasion of the anniversary of the death on 1 March 1943 of Brother Alfano in Ventimiglia (Italy), the brothers of the General House join the community of the college of San Leone Magno to pray around his tomb and recall his example of Marist life. This year, the opportunity to do this came at the end of the week. On Friday 4 March 2011, a good number of the brothers of the Generalate travelled to San Leone Magno to share prayer and a meal.

The celebration provides an opportunity to discover new facets of the life of this model of Marist holiness. Brother Alfano Vaser (born Hône 1873 – deceased Ventimiglia 1943) was an Italian Marist Brother and, indeed the first Italian Marist Brother, first in the chronological sense but also in the spiritual sense. His was a life without any sensational happenings but rather a totally interior adventure. His guiding principle, around which his whole life revolved, was very simple: every Christian is called to be holy like Jesus, the Gospel shows us the way to holiness, and for Marists the Gospel way is indicated by the spirituality of the Founder, incarnated in the Rule of his congregation. Thus to become a saint, it is enough to translate into daily living the Gospel demands, as the Rule requires.

A few days ago, the Brothers of the General House received from the hands of the Superior General the edition of the Constitutions including the modifications introduced by the last General Chapters. They are the rule of Marist life, which Brother Alfano called "the bread of the house". By eating daily of this bread, Brother Alfano lived the Gospel in the Marist style so well that he has been called "copy of the Founder" and "the living Rule."
