The Month of May in the General Administration community

07/06/2011: General House

The Month of May is over. Since the origins of the Institute, the month of May has been a special time of devotion to our Mother for the Marist Brothers. In countries where this month coincides with Spring, it is the month of flowers. Other countries, moving into winter at this stage, consecrate the month of December to Mary. There are always reasons to honour the Blessed Virgin, and in each place expressions of devotion differ according to circumstances.

The Brothers of the General Administration community have consecrated this month to honour Mary in different ways. In the chapel, various artistic representations of Mary, Mother and faith companion, have enriched the celebration of daily prayer and Mass. Among them is the magnificent icon presented to the community by the Brothers of the community of Athens during their Easter visit to Greece. The composition, a work of extreme refinement, shows the tenderness of the Mother carrying her Child in her arms.

To conclude this Month of Mary, the community went on pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Mentorella, near Guadagnolo, the highest village in the region of Lazio (1,218 m). This high place favoured by nature is one of the oldest Marian sanctuaries in Italy. On arrival at the site, a fine statue of Blessed John-Paul II welcomes the pilgrim. During his pontificate, this Pope paid an official visit to the sanctuary, which is served by the Polish Resurrectionist Fathers. The interior of the chapel houses a wooden statue of the Madonna and child from the twelfth century. Mary is seated on a throne, with her arms around her Son. Both are wearing royal crowns. At her feet, we placed all the work done by the General Administration in the service of the Institute and we prayed for those dear to us. A succulent picnic in the meadows not far from the sanctuary brought our pilgrimage of devotion and fraternity to an end.
