FMSI Child Rights Workshop

The Child Rights workshop organized by FMSI for the “link” persons – the contact people of the Foundation in the Marist Provinces - is coming to an end. The participants have just come back from Geneva, where they attended the work sessions of the human rights monitoring bodies of the UN, namely the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Philippines and Algeria, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child. They also met with one of the 18 experts of the Committee. After one week of theoretical study on these subjects, in Geneva the “link” persons experienced concretely how the mechanisms and bodies of the UN function and how the NGOs can work at the institutional international level.

Other issues of the course were: an introduction on how the UN works, the role of civil society through NGOs, the experience of FMSI, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, with a particular focus on Articles 28 and 29 (right to education and its purpose), involvement of children and young people in the mobilization of civil society for social change, the solidarity itinerary of the Marist Provinces.  The programme also included times for personal reflection, group work, role playing simulating the UPR.
