Participation of the Marists at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development

31/07/2012: Brazil

Two events have been held recently inRio de Janeiro: from 13 to 22 June, The United Nations Conference on sustainable development – « Rio+20 » - and from 15 to 23 June, the « Summit of the Peoples ». These two great events were inspired by the same concern: a more just and durable world. The Province of « Brasil Centro-Norte », in phase with this movement for the wellbeing of the planet, took part in both these meetings with representatives who acted and reflected on environmental questions.

The Marist Institute of Solidarity (IMS),  with the aid of partner institutions, was the kingpin of the  5th  Latin-American and Caribbean  Meeting for Economic Solidarity and Just Commerce, which was held just before « Rio+20 » and the « Summit of the Peoples ». For three days, more than 300 participants took part in plenary sessions and six workshops on : just commerce and consumption in solidarity ; finances in solidarity ; culture, construction and the development of thought on solidarity ; popular strategies and public politics in the promotion of economic solidarity ;  local and territorial development, and systematic crisis and development model. There were also conferences on the analysis of the economic situation, the contribution of the social and solidarity economy in Latin  America and the Caribbean. The meeting terminated in a letter addressed to « Rio+20 ».
