Promotion and defence of the rights of children

The FMSI Geneva office visits the Province of Santa Maria de los Andes

17/10/2012: Chile

With the aim of strengthening the promotion and defence of the rights of children in the sectors of the Marist Province of Santa María de los Andes, Manel Mendoza and Vicente Falqueto, of the Geneva Office of FMSI, spent 35 days (1 September to 4 October) working in Chile, Bolivia and Peru. The main objective was to school the agents of Marist education in the basic elements of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the universal mechanisms for supervising human rights.

In all these places, the FMSI reps participated with national and local organizations involved in political activities in favour of children’s rights, taking the opportunity to connect the local Marist presence with FMSI in Geneva. They made visits to Marist works located in situations of poverty, where they had meetings with groups of children, adolescents, parents of families and teachers so as to make them more aware of the rights of children.

Manel and Vicente held meetings with the members of the different organizations of the Marist Institute (Sector Mission Councils, Secretariats of Mission, Animation Teams) to familiarize them with the mission and functioning of FMSI. In each Sector of the Province of Santa María de los Andes, they ran a training workshop of 2 or 3 days for teachers and professionals in each of the works of the sector and for those who may take up the animation of this area at the local level. At each workshop national specialists took part to talk about the topic of children’s rights in the context of the country’s situation. They had meetings with representatives of institutions taking part in the drawing up of the alternative reports, and presented the work of FMSI and learned about the way these processes are being developed in the country.

Important to note is the signing of an agreement of co-operation for the formation of an agency to watch over children. This official act took place in the National University of Chile, one of the bodies involved with this agency together with the Chilean United Nations Association and FMSI.

FMSI is grateful to the Province for its invitation as well as for the development of its work for the Rights of Children in the Marist Institute.
