Meeting of former Marist Brothers

04/07/2013: Guatemala - Photo gallery

Folowing an invitation from the Br Provincial Br José A. Alonso, on Sunday 16 June, we former Marist Brothers living in Guatemala found ourselves once more in the former Marist University Residence (RUM), a formation centre which harboured us when we were much younger…. The building has become today a Centre for Meetings and Formation Courses and, at the same time, house for the elderly or sick Brothers, as well as continuing to be the Provincial Residence.

A number of us had not been back for a long time to see the great changes in the internal structure of the house.

The schema of the gathering was simple, as usual : presentation of the communities in the library of the old  scholasticate and presentation of the life and mission of the Brothers. From there we went to visit the chapel of the deceased Brothers (Chapel of Fidelity). « Hello, here’s so and so !… » « And this one, who is it ? » « Luckily there’s the religious name or I would not have recognized this Brother » « Where’s Brother so and so ? » These were some of the questions or comments heard. Certainly all these questions ‘betrayed’ a sentiment of gratitude in regard of the deceased Brothers for their lives given in our lands, in the Marist way.

The next step was the visit to the old and sick Brothers of the Champagnat Residence. Br Marcelino Ganzarain, superior of the community, was waiting for us at the door and explained the purpose of the house and some details relating to the Brothers we were going to meet. And that is how, without protocol, we went to the meeting with the Brothers.

Of course, the Eucharist could not be missed. At eleven we joined two other groups before the altar : teachers from the Marist schools and some persons having a day of reflection. Together we shared the Word and the Eucharist (the bread and the wine).

After Mass, we had a group photo ; then Brothers and former Brothers shared the meal, a long convivial time and the traditional tombola. At four o’clock we said goodbye, with the firm intention of meeting again next year, « God willing ».

In my own name and the name of all those who took part in the reunion, I want to thank all for the possibility of sharing what we have been, what we have lived. I pray that the indelible seal of our being Marist is never erased.

To next time !

Leonel A. de León V.
