IV Provincial Meeting of Marist Youth

07/08/2013: El Salvador

On Friday, July 26, the Marist youth of Central America and the Caribbean began the IV Provincial Meeting with plenty of smiles, jokes, games, and chanting the names of the different countries represented. They were accompanied by young people from Canada, Spain and Portugal, who also were greeted with applause and cheers, and by chanting the names of their countries.

After such a warm welcome, the young people and the Brothers could enjoy a pleasant celebrative moment, full of dancing and creative group dynamics directed by the animators.

Then Brother Daniel Martín officially welcomed the participants from each country, and invited them to open their hearts to the Youth Meeting experience. He announced the slogan of the meeting: Marists, making a difference!

He also mentioned that the meeting was aimed at becoming more Marist, not just at the level of feelings, but as the capacity to make a difference in our societies by doing something meaningful for others.

After Daniel’s intervention, Brother Hipólito Pérez, provincial of Central America and the Caribbean, spoke about the slogan “Gathered around a Name and a Story: We Are Marists!”

In addition, he told the young people that they were invited to “make a difference in a world that wants to program our entire life: what we choose, wear, listen and buy”.

Making a difference as Marists, according to Brother Hipólito, means “choosing what actually fills your heart and gives meaning to your life; living with deep convictions and fighting with passion for something important; awakening the new consciousness; earnestly participating, through small gestures and words, in the construction of a world which becomes always better, more just, humane and supportive; welcoming the project of Jesus’ Good News and of His Kingdom into our lives, being the protagonists of a new humanity”.

The participants also received a message of greeting from the Ad Gentes Marist Brothers belonging to the Province who are in Asia: César Henríquez, Gilbert Barillas and Miguel Vielva.

In their letter they said that “there are many children and teenagers in Asia who lack the most basic necessities of life. We see the world through their eyes, and want to be signs of God’s love for them and with them”. They also wished the participants to be able to “experience the joy of sharing one’s life with others, in Marist simplicity and solidarity”.

The day ended with the ice-breaking group dynamics, through which the participants from the different countries were able to interact among themselves.
