Marist Solidarity (MSol)

Marist Brothers High School in Suva

07/04/2014: Fiji

Marist Solidarity (MSol), a program of the Province of Australia, has a project for the Marist Brothers High School in Suva, Fiji, established in 1949. The school caters for 774 boys aged 14 to 19, many of which are from families usually unable to afford the cost of education.

MBHS has found it increasingly difficult to provide learning resources for education at the school. This has become a significant problem for effective teaching especially with relation to the provision of textbooks. Teachers must resort to using outdated editions of textbooks shared between large groups of students. Textbook use for homework is impossible.

The first stage of this project started in 2013 when class sets of textbooks were provide by MSol for Year 11 students. Improvement of textbook storage was also carried out to ensure that textbooks remain in good condition in the coming years. February this year saw the next stage of project completed with sets of textbooks being purchased for the Year 12 students.

The improved access to class textbooks has dramatically improved the quality and consistency of the education offered to the students and MBHS.
