A Marist College receives the ‘School Solidarity Prize’

27/10/2005: Brazil

The Marist College Pius XII has once again been awarded the ‘School Solidarity Prize’. This prize is part of the Programme “Young Volunteers, School Solidarity” which has as its objective to invite young people to do voluntary work in order to improve the social justice in their country.
The announcement was made at the start of this week on the United Nations site Faça Parte - Instituto Brasil Voluntário, an organisation created in 2001 during the International Year of Volunteers to promote the voluntary movement among the young.
The prize is recognised by the Ministry of Education, the National Council of Secretaries of State of Education, the National Union of Municipal Directors of Education, the United Nations, UNESCO and UNV (United Nations Volunteers) in order to support voluntary action in schools.
The programme ‘Young Volunteer, School Solidarity’ is enrolled in an education plan which is at the base of a nation, by making a place for youth devoted to the spirit of solidarity and to social conscience.
It consists of a reality lived intensely at Marist College Pius XII, in Novo Hamburgo, for more than fifty years. We could mention, for example, their solidarity actions in the first semester to help the Iguaçu village in the region of Canudos.
“I believe that the strength of youth, allied to the school, to the participation of educators, of the family and of the community, is the winning strategy for a just nation, and we at Marist College Pius XII are thus happy to be recognised,” emphasised the Director, Brother Luiz Gerhardt.
It is important to note that the School Solidarity Prize incites us to always better educate and to pose social action so that each student becomes an agent of social transformation.
