Retreat and review of Constitutions

26/04/2015: Philippines

In response to the invitation of Br. Emili Turu to make a thorough review of our Constitutions, the brothers of the Philippines Sector devoted the annual Holy Week Retreat to reflect on “Stories of the Journey”.  As in the previous years, the brothers came together in the Jesuit Retreat House in Malaybalay City from March 29 to April 5.

Br. Luis Sobrado, Br. Wilfredo Lubrico, Br. Demosthenes Calabria, Ms. Agnes Reyes, and Ms. Elma Rafil composed the team that helped the brothers go through the process recommended by the International Commission.

The first day was devoted to “Our Identity in Today’s World”, which touched on Chapters 1 and 11.  The theme of the second day was “Consecrated Mission”, which focused on Chapters 2 and 5.  Day 3 concentrated on “Spirituality”, giving special attention to Chapter 4.  On the fourth day, the brothers reflected on Chapter 3, with the theme, “Fraternity and Belonging”.  Day 5 invited the brothers to review Chapters 6-10, under the title, “On Eagle’s Wings”.  The sixth day, which fell on Black Saturday, was spent for the synthesis, wrap-up and closing ceremony.

The whole process was conducted alongside the Holy Week observance.  On Maundy Thursday, the group celebrated the Liturgy of the Last Supper and Washing of the Feet.  That evening, the different communities took turns in the adoration.

On Good Friday, the group meditated on the Stations of the Cross in the morning, celebrated the Liturgy of the Word and the Veneration of the Cross in the afternoon, and held the Rite of Reconciliation in the evening.

During the Sector Assembly in the afternoon of Black Saturday, the brothers listened to updates on the different aspects of the life of the Province and the Sector.  There was also time allotted for the open forum.

Br. Robert Teoh, Provincial, was also present during the week.  He made himself available for individual consultation, interview and sharing.

The Easter Vigil Liturgy brought the whole experience to conclusion.  During the Mass, 12 young brothers renewed their vows.  As a tradition, the brothers celebrated Easter afterwards with a sumptuous dinner.
