New Superior of the Community of the General House

Br Antonio Sancamillo

27/06/2015: General House

On June 22 last, Br. Emili Turú, Superior General, announced the appointment of Br. Antonio Sancamillo as the new Superior of the community of the General House from November 2015.

Br. Antonio, at present, is the Superior of the community of Taormina, in Italy and belongs to the Mediterranean Province.  He has always worked in education, especially in the School San Leone Magno (Roma), in Giugliano and, from 2004, as Director of the school of Taormina.

Br. Antonio replaces Br. Pietro Bettin. Br. Emili has thanked Br. Pietro for his work with the following words: “Thank you very much for your kindness and attention not only to the Brothers of the community and toward the laity of the General Administration, but also toward many of the guests of this community, which is somewhat complex”.

Br. Pietro in turn, summarized the six years of service: “Having lived with extraordinary Brothers, from all over the world, who have enriched me with their presence, has been a unique and special experience. I have been able to share moments of prayer and of rest in a multicultural context. I have discovered that diversity is a gift.  I have learnt to re-dimension my opinions.  Being close to the General Council has opened my horizon and I have acquired the awareness that the Marist world is much larger than my Province.  I believe that this community represents, at local level what the Institute is at world level”.

The role of the Superior of the General House is described in the Constitutions: “The Superior of the Community is at the service of his Brothers to help them respond to their personal, communitarian and apostolic vocation” (number 152).  Especially in the house in Rome the Superior tries to promote or develop the qualities of each Brother, in order to guarantee the service to the Institute and, at the same time, respond to the challenge of cultural integration, in such a way that diversity is respected, there is growth in unity which does not imply uniformity.
