Marist Brazil debates quality education

5th International Congress of Marist Education

01/11/2016: Brazil

The fifth International Congress of Marist Education took place at the Convention Centre of Pernambuco in Olinda, Brazil from Oct. 11 – 14.

With the theme “Quality education: senses, experiences and horizons,” the event – promoted by Marist Union of Brazil (UMBRASIL) – gathered over 2,000 educators and managers, entities linked to education as well as national and international guests, to discuss the promotion of the right to a comprehensive quality education.

The opening ceremony portrayed the Marist presence in Brazil and in the state of Pernambuco in the formation and evangelization of children, adolescents and youth.

Brother Valter Pedro Zancanaro, the general coordinator of the event, stressed the importance of discussing the future of education.

“Our desire is for this to be a significant time of knowledge, learning, dialogues and interlocutions of striking and productive experiences,” affirmed the Brohter.

During the event’s four days, the 150 lecturers, among them big names of education as Leonardo Boff, Bernard Charlot and Jorge Larrosa, talked about “emotion, spirituality and science,” “education of tomorrow: senses and horizons,” “education, care and ecology” among other things that contribute to an excellent academic education.

During the fifth International Congress of Marist Education, the second Marist Congress of Learners and Families also took place, dealing with topics of great relevance to the reality of young people. Around 100 young Marists spoke about their experiences, the reality in the classroom and the future of education.

Communication of Scientific Work

In the first edition of the International Congress of Marist Education, the communication of its work was a success. With over 50 oral presentations, 200 academic papers, 20 posters and 30 reports of presented experiments, the communication was a great opportunity to exchange experiences.

“The scientific work enriched the fifth International Congress of Marist Education. They were spaces where convivences became learning and sharing of knowledge among young people, researchers and education professionals. We can update the knowledge and motivation for further studies and research,” said the coordinator of the Scientific Committee, Ricardo Mariz.

Multiculturalism and spirituality were remarkable at the fifth International Congress of Marist Education.

Exalting the Marist charism and the richness of the culture of the northeast of Brazil, in moments of reflection and sending, Marist students from the cities of Surubim, Natal, Recife and Joao Pessoa performed cultural performances that filled the eyes and hearts of the participants.
