Brother Joaquim Clotet receives the title of Citizen of Porto Alegre

11/10/2007: Brazil

On September 25 the rector of PUCRS, Joaquim Clotet, was awarded the title of Citizen of Porto Alegre in the municipal Chamber, a tribute proposed by councillor Newton Braga Rosa (PP). During the ceremony, which was attended by different members of the University academic community, Clotet presented a eulogy to the PUCRS, acknowledging its incumbents, professors, managerial and technical administrators, who, according to him, embraced with great determination the cause of further education, making Porto Alegre a city prosperous in the arts, in industry, in trade and in other activities.

Clotet highlighted the formation of more than 126.000 professionals from the foundation of the University and he mentioned the different units and centres of the Institution, such as the Museum of Science and Technology (MCT), the Tecnopuc, the Sports Centre, the Hospital of San Lucas, the Institute of Geriatrics and Gerontology, among others.

The rector also pointed out that he feels honoured to belong to the gaucho capital and to fulfil his duties and obligations as if he had been born there. This distinction is like a birth certificate, although I maintain my Spanish roots , he affirmed. He remembered, also that Porto Alegre is a capital that is committed to, and invests in the future by combining work, administration and technology with the fundamental values of life, education, health and the environment.

Clotet was born in Barcelona (Spain) and he has held Brazilian nationality from 1990. He graduated in Philosophy and Arts and was awarded a doctorate in Ethics at the University of Barcelona, where he gave classes for nine years. He continued his studies in Ethics at the Gregorian University in Rome, going on later to the Kennedy Institute of Ethics in Washington. He was a pioneer in the area of Bioethics in Rio Grande do Sul and has been in PUCRS since 1984.
