Marist Brothers’ San José School

75 Years of Marist Brothers’ presence in Huacho

04/02/2008: Peru

In 1932 the Marist Brothers in Peru decided to extend their apostolic endeavors outside of Lima, the capital city. To that end, they determined to start up diverse educational activities in a school located in Huacho, a city whose name was not even known to them.

In order to get their work underway, the Brothers set their eyes on renting the resi-dence called Villa Olimpia, a wonderful structure from which one could glimpse the sea. It had been built in the period 1922 to 1924 according to the wishes of Doctor Abel Matto. Doctor Matto was an outstanding physician closely tied to the history of Huacho from the end of the nineteenth century right up to his death.

At the request of Bishop Luciano Codina, the then pastor of the parish, the rental contact for the building in question was signed. The signatories were Olimpia Fernández and the memorable figure, Brother Emilio Valentín, representing the Marist superiors. On the morning of March 4, 1932, Brother Emilio became the first Marist Brother to set foot in the town of Huacho.

On March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church and of the Marist Brothers, the founding community members were assigned. Because of the feast day on which the assignments were given, the school was named Saint Joseph’s. A few days later, Brother Octavio, Andrés and Mateo arrived at the site.

These dates mark the beginning of the story of Colegio San José Maristas Huacho, Perú.
