Darren Joseph Burge

I am 51 years of age and the youngest of a family of three children – I have a brother and sister. My mother is still alive and in good health. My father died three years ago after a long illness with Parkinson’s Disease. My family has had a long association with the Marist Brothers. I first came into contact with the Brothers as a boy of 10 when I commenced my education at Marist Brothers Mosman/North Sydney where I attended school for 8 years.

I have been a teacher of English, History and Religious Education for 28 years. For 25 years, I have held positions of middle and senior leadership in secondary schools. I was privileged to work as the Principal of The John Berne School in Sydney for six years, a school that educates children with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties who have fallen out of the mainstream school system. I am presently the Principal of St Augustine’s College, Cairns (Queensland), a large boarding College in the northern part of Australia. I have also completed extensive training as a spiritual director over the last decade. During my time in religious life, I have been a leader of Brothers’ Communities and I was the Vocations Director in the former Sydney Province for a period of time. I have served on the Provincial Council for both the former Sydney and Australian Provinces for over 10 years.

I am excited by the prospect that the General Chapter will be a new beginning for us as Marists.
