Interprovince Novitiate Canberra

A new novice in Australia

24/06/2009: Australia

Four weeks after his arrival in Canberra Patrick Connell was formally accepted by Br Julian Casey his Provincial into the Novitiate. This took place on Sunday April 5th within a simple but moving prayer service in the presence of the Canberra Community, Formation team members from Melbourne and Sydney and our Postulants. Br. Julian affirmed Patricks decision and told him that “he had the support and encouragement of his family, friends, Brothers and Lay Marists and that this was a most important indication of his vocation”. He went on to say “that this was a moment of great joy for all Australian Marists and for the Province of Melbourne”. Patrick was then presented with his Marist Cross, a copy of the Constitutions of the Brothers, a prayer candle and Icon of the Annunciation.

Patrick hails from Perth in Western Australia and is a former student of Newman College, Churchlands. After completing Year 12 Patrick moved east to Melbourne and worked on the Australian Remar team as a Youth Minister for two years. In 2008 Patrick commenced his Postulancy at Fitzroy living in the Community with lay Marists and Brothers. During this year he continued with his tertiary studies at ACU.

For the first part of this year we travel to Sydney weekly so that Patrick can attend the Inter Congregational Formation Course - Kairos - situated at the Divine Word Centre at Marsfield. This programme covers many facets of Scripture, Theology, Religious Life and Spiritual & Human Development. There are eight nationalities and nine Religious Congregations represented .
We are grateful for the prayerful support and interest in Patricks formation within the Brothers Community and Marist College here in Canberra and Australian Marists generally.
