Two days after the end of the General Conference in Negombo, Sri Lanka, the Province of Sri Lanka and Pakistan celebrated the closing ceremony of the Marist Vocation Year in the same city. The ceremony took place in Maris Stella College, beginning with a prayer before the picture of Mary that is found at the main entrance. Three flags were brought in procession: the National flag, the Vatican flag and the Vocation Year flag. The procession continued until the school gymnasium where various brothers said some words to everyone assembled. Brother Superior General, Seán Sammon, offered a brief reflection on vocations and the importance of the process of discernment to discover and strengthen your vocation. He also invited all to continue to maintain a sustained effort in the area of vocation ministry. Following this, Brother Ernesto Sánchez, representing the Vocations Commission, thanked and congratulated the Vocation Year committee for the work they had done. This committee included Brothers Joseph Peiris, Chinthana Nonis, Robert Miranda, Sandalal Alwis, Mervyn Perera and two laypeople Mr Niroshan and Mrs Lumin, who is the mother of one of the novices. The different talks alternated with songs and folk dances performed by the students of the school.
The ceremony moved on to the reading of the Word of God, preceded by the invocation of the Holy Spirit, a moment when all the participants received the light by lighting their candles from the flame of the Vocation Year candle. At the end, the Provincial, Brother Michael de Wass, said some words of thanks and Brother Luis García Sobrado, Vicar General, recited a prayer for vocations before the picture of Saint Marcellin. Present at the ceremony were students from various schools, fourteen Marist aspirants, one postulant, eight novices, brothers from Sri Lanka and other countries of Asia as well as some Brothers Provincial and General Councillors who had participated in the General Conference. Some religious sisters, one priest and some neighbouring families also participated in the ceremony. The ceremony ended with the song “With Marcellin”, remembering the central theme of the Vocation Year, written in Singhalese, Tamil and English: “Marcellin’s dream, Live it today!”
