Community of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux celebrates the memory of Bro Henri Vergès

09/05/2019: France

The brothers of the Community of Saint Paul-Trois-Châteaux of the province of l'Hermitage celebrated on May 8, the 1st Mass in honour of Henri and the other 18 martyrs of Algeria, in Saint Paul-3-Châteaux.

In the Eucharist were present the Bishop of Valencia, Mgr Pierre-Yves MICHEL and the Bishop of Carcassonne-Narbonne, Mgr Alain PLANET, who had known Brother Henri Vergés well, killed with Sister Paul-Hélène, on 8 May 1994, in Algiers.

In his homily, the bishop spoke of the lives of Henri and Paul-Hélène, highlighting their respective charisms and their daily fidelity to the Lord, in the service of young people, at the library on Ben Cheneb Street where they worked.

The liturgical texts and songs fed the prayer of the assembly. The participants could feel in communion with the martyrs whose photos they saw on a large cross next to the altar, as well as on the song sheet that repeated the one from the beatification mass held in Oran on December 8.

The Mass was followed by the filmed projection "The Fifth Gospel". A play written by Adrien CANDIARD, a Dominican friar, which Brother Henri Vergès, an educator of Algerian youth for twenty-five years, refers to, based on letters written by Brother Henri and one of his former students. Thanks to his composition "The Fifth Gospel", Bro Adrien won the "Father Jacques Hamel, 2019" Prize on February 1st in Lourdes.

"We are sure, they (the 19 martyrs) are now watching over Algeria... And we imagine that, among you too, the day will have been rich in emotion for the Church of Algeria, in the simplicity of her presence and the thought of the immediate future of the people of this country", it is read at the end of the letter of the Brothers of Saint Paul-3-Châteaux, addressed to the Brothers of Algeria, on May 10, 2019, on the occasion of May 8, the Liturgical Feast of the Martyrs of Algeria.
